A city of tangled cobbled streets and medieval marvels, brought to life with vibrant culture

In many ways, your first view of Ávila would look the same whether you were visiting today, or 500 years ago. Experience the drama of medieval Spain in one of its best-preserved cities. Ávila is far from a museum piece, though. Uncover independent restaurants and wine bars and a calendar of events that fill the streets with music, art and energy.

Things to do

HISTORY
A UNESCO World Heritage City famed for the towering walls that enclose its core, Ávila transports you back in time. Walk the 1.7km stretch of the city walls for a high-up view of the historic architecture, then lose yourself among the cobbled walkways and sunlit squares. The birthplace of Saint Theresa, a spiritual leader and saint revered across Spain, Ávila is also a major pilgrimage centre. Sites such as the cathedral and Convent of Saint Theresa bathe the old town with a sense of calm contemplation.

FOOD & DRINK
As evening falls and day trippers from Madrid depart, Ávila’s plaza restaurants become atmospheric spots to while away an evening. Order a glass of Tempranillo and watch as the sun goes down and the city walls light up. If you’ve worked up an appetite, Castilian-Leonese specialities such as Chuletón de Ávila steak will hit the spot. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, signature tapas dishes include chorizo cooked in cider, fried fish with lemon and nutty, local sheep cheeses.

EVENTS
Easter week in Ávila is a true spectacle, with processions and traditions that have been held each year as far back as the 16th century. The after-dark Miserere procession on Easter Tuesday is poignant and powerful, where crowds fill the cobbled streets with singing. Avila is also home to frequent festival days marking its medieval heritage, as well as summer music events that see concerts performed atop the city walls.
