Introducing Sussex

This is the land of grand houses and fine gardens; the stomping ground of world-renowned writers and painters – fringed by seaside resorts and bordered by ancient forest. Dip your toes in the sea at Eastbourne and Brighton, or into 1000 years of history at Arundel Castle. Walk the white cliffs and woodland of the South Downs. Or play Lords (and Ladies) of the Manor in your own luxury retreat. And, to round off your day, pop open a bottle of Sussex’s own acclaimed sparkling wine.

Things to do

NATURE
Escape to the South Downs and immerse yourself in rolling hills and peaceful rivers, wildflower meadows and tranquil woodland. And the closer you look, the more you discover – from traditional, tucked away pubs to vineyards. For a touch of refinement – and a taste of history – find time to explore Leonardslee, Wakehurst or Nyman gardens.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Take a nostalgic trip through Sussex on the Bluebell Steam Railway. Little ones will love the sights and sounds of the old locomotive chugging through the countryside, while grown-ups can indulge in a spot of afternoon tea. Or head off on a bear hunt. Guided walks through Ashdown Forest – said to have inspired A. A. Milne’s stories – will lead you to the sites of some of Winnie the Pooh’s great adventures.

HISTORY
Dating back to the 11th century, Arundel Castle gives a vivid glimpse into English history. Cheer on archers, listen to a storyteller weave tales of heroes and villains, or simply stroll around the walled gardens. But be sure to climb the Keep – at the top you’ll find the perfect spot for views of the South Downs.

Top Tip from SLH

Wander back in time at Battle Abbey – the spot where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066.
