Amilla Maldives

Infinite blues meet verdant jungle in this Maldivian island utopia

Set among swaying frangipanis and cashmere-soft sand, Amilla Maldives is a celebration of Maldivian life, culture and its pristine natural environment. Follow leafy jungle paths to find secret beaches, collect fruit and herbs in the island’s own kitchen garden, move to the beat of a traditional Bodu Beru show, or simply meditate on the endless horizon.

Soothing, airy villas finished with sleek wood and marble each come with their own private pool and blur the boundaries between land, ocean, jungle and sky. Cool off in a wave-skimming hammock alongside your over-water sunset villa, wake to the chirrup of the jungle canopy in a magical treetop suite, or bury your feet in the satin sands of a breezy beach villa. Replenish your energy with the Javvu Spa’s varied menu of natural therapies, or spend the day in the dappled shade of the beach club. Explore the underwater kaleidoscope beyond the shallows or see the once-in-a-lifetime spectacle of manta rays gathering beneath a full moon. After sunset the island comes alive with gastronomic experiences, circus performances and music from around the world.

Environmentally Conscious

From an ongoing coral propagation project and Long Tail Tropic bird breeding programme, to complimentary bicycles, electric golf buggies, an outdoor zero power gym, and a 3km walking trail for guests to explore the island – which retains 70% of its natural vegetation and is covered with over 2,500 coconut trees – EarthCheck Silver certified Amilla keeps its UNESCO biosphere setting front of mind. Located near the Manta Ray-filled waters of Hanifaru Bay, the resort collects data for the Maldivian Manta Ray Project (MMRP) research into the country’s Manta population, its movements, and how tourism affects their environment. All drinking water at Amilla is created using reverse osmosis (desalination), eliminating the need for plastic bottles. The resort has partnered with Lemongrass House to create a range of 100% organic, biodegradable bathroom products in refillable ceramic containers, with a signature scent of tea tree, mint, and germanium blended for its antiviral and anti-bacterial properties.

Cultural Custodians

Amilla Maldives is continually coming up with creative ways to celebrate island culture, from founding the country’s first and only Maldives Cultural Week in 2021 which promotes local musical, artistic, and fashion talent, to holding weekly Maldivian dinners and cooking classes for guests to get an authentic taste of Baa Atoll and beyond. The resort regularly hosts a visiting artist who trains local islanders in the traditional and declining craft of lacquer work, as well as welcoming guests with the local Bodu Beru drums and dance dressed in the Maldivian Feyli sarong. The Feyli pattern can also be found on a variety of items throughout the resort, including the bamboo key cards, drinks menu covers, spa features, and will soon be incorporated into new staff uniforms. Meanwhile, treatments in the jungle spa follow Dhivehi Beys, traditional Maldivian medicine which have been implemented by an experienced local practitioner through holistic workshops.

Community Minded

Locally owned Amilla Maldives cultivates a strong sense of family throughout its staff members, many of whom are Maldivian born with a number of Maldivians in management positions – including the Resort Manager. While many products are island grown in the large-scale hydroponics garden and homemade by Amilla, from a range of probiotic sodas including eight flavours of kombucha, to the resort’s own plant-based milk, yoghurt, ice-cream, jams, and pickles, Amilla purchases from small, local producers wherever possible, alongside employing a Maldivian artist and DJ for guest entertainment. The resort works closely with its network of partners to purchase from responsible suppliers, maintaining a cruelty-free meat programme and using natural or recyclable packing, in addition to contributing fees from Manta Ray snorkelling in Hanifaru Bay towards the community of Baa Atoll Biosphere rangers who work tirelessly to protect the marine life and surrounding waters.
