Environmentally Conscious
As a celebrated climate-fiction author and economist turned hotelier, the protection of the natural world is close to owner and sustainability champion Oana Aristide’s heart. The plastic-free property uses solar panels to heat its water, offers ceramic amenities and biodegradable slippers, alongside running a regreening and tree planting project in collaboration with the Cyclades Preservation Fund, to offset the carbon footprint of their guests’ travel to the island. There will be a live webcam, where guests can see the ‘baby forest’ grow, alongside planting and watering activities, a ‘tree headcount’, and a carbon-trap count. Aristide also repairs the terraces on the surrounding hillsides to prevent further soil erosion and promote water retention, allowing the hotel to plant native plants with plans to install a composter, keep chickens, and grow their own fruit and vegetables on recently rented agricultural, organic, pesticide and chemical-free land.
Cultural Custodians
Housed within the former tax residency of the Cyclades, great care was taken during the non-invasive refurbishment of the neoclassical mansion with Art Deco elements to preserve its historic features, from the high ceilings to the original room layout. As a nod to Greek cultural heritage, nine different kinds of Greek marble have been used throughout the interiors, which draw on the earthier tones of the island’s wilder, northern side rather than the typical Cycladic colour palette of blue and white. The art-centric hotel displays a permanent collection in its common areas and rooms, while its dedicated art gallery hosts regular exhibitions of resident artists. Aristide is perfectly placed in the heart of Hermoupolis for guests to discover the city’s many cultural attractions, including the Ano Syros medieval settlement, the industrial and shipbuilding quarters, and the Kastri pre-historic site complete with archaeological museum.
Community Minded
As an active member of the Hermoupolis community, Aristide Hotel promotes and purchases local wherever possible, from sharing local shops on social media and in a welcome email to guests, to highlighting locally run experiences – including textile factory tours, ceramic and pottery workshops, vineyard visits, Cycladic cooking classes, and herb foraging expeditions with the hotel chef. The hotel’s cuisine is a celebration of the Cyclades, inspired by island recipes and made using locally sourced ingredients, including an exclusively Greek wine list, and fish caught by small, local fishing boats, with plans to initiate a sustainable fishing training programme for local fisherman. Guests are encouraged to attend the panegyri (village feasts) which take place every summer to get an authentic taste for Syros life, as well as local film, art, and music festivals. Aristide sourced its custom furniture from local carpenters and marble-makers, while all upholstering was done on the island.

Independent Minds: The Aristide Family
Since publishing her literary thriller, celebrated author and economist Oana Aristide turned her multi-faceted mind to reviving a former shipowner’s neoclassical mansion on the Cycladic isle of Syros – one of the smallest and most often overlooked Greek islands, with an industrial-meets-artistic edge. With the help of her sister Jasmin, and mother Simona, Oana has put her art, heart, and sustainably-driven soul into Aristide Hotel – a nine-room restoration project with an art gallery, creative workshops, and artist-in-residency programmes.
