Castello di Reschio
Timeless retreat in the heart of the Umbrian countryside
Castello di Reschio is a slice of timeless Italy. A grand estate huddled amidst the rolling green hills of Umbria, this is a place made for romantics and intrepid travellers alike. Imagine centuries-old stone and Cypress trees wreathed in mist. The silence of a sun-drenched morning, broken only by the distant echo of cantering Andalusian horses. Come here for adventure or relaxation – and leave utterly enchanted.
Rooms come courtesy of nine bespoke farmhouses dotted across a 1,500-hectare landscape. Each one has been exquisitely renovated, with vintage furniture complementing the original stone. Feast on locally-inspired dishes at the Alle Scuderie restaurant, which prides itself on using homemade produce – including honey, olive oil, pasta, and wine. And if you want to work off all that indulgence, why not make the most of your private swimming-pool or the estate’s state-of-the-art tennis courts?

Take in stunning vineyard-filled vistas on horseback, on mountain bike or on foot. Pack a picnic and breathe in the scent of the meadows by the lake. If you fancy venturing into the world beyond, the hilltop town of Cortona is only a short drive away. It boasts evidence of Umbria’s ancient Etruscan past – plus an impressive Renaissance cathedral.

Environmentally Conscious
Adopting an ‘as nature intended’ approach to their 1,500-hectare estate, the Bolza family has protected the Umbrian wilderness for thirty years, introducing a successful re-wilding programme in the ancient forests which are now filled with roe deer, wild boar, and porcupines, alongside encouraging the growth of oak and chestnut trees which now represent 66% of the fully organic and biodynamic estate which runs off state-of-the-art hydraulic and electrical systems. Guests can join the resident beekeeper to discover the rich millefiori honey made on-site, the gamekeeper for wildlife watching, and foragers to learn about the medicinal and nutritional properties of Reschio's vegetation. The estate’s mapping programme ensures that the best foraging sites are recorded with harvesting dates allowing sufficient time for the truffles, herbs, and flowers to recover, which are also used in the hotel kitchen and spa for all-natural dishes and rituals.
Cultural Custodians
The entire raison d'être of Reschio has been to revive derelict farmhouses and a dilapidated castle to become bespoke homes and a meticulously renovated hotel which both preserve their history and look to the future. Today, you will find architect and artistic visionary Benedikt in the estate’s Tabaccaia, the 1940s tobacco warehouse which has been converted into a creative studio where his designs are handcrafted by local artisans who make up the B.B. for Reschio team, from custom-made marble washstands to intricate stucco work. The Bolzas are incorrigible collectors who scour under-the-radar auctions, flea markets and important antique fairs for unique pieces of furniture, sculpture, art or decorative items to be restored by local artisans, and become available for viewing and purchase from the Reschio Dealership at the Tabaccaia, which also plays host to art exhibitions, including Nic Fiddian-Green’s monumental equine sculptures.
Community Minded
The Bolzas extend their sense of family to the Reschio team, most of whom are local residents, and offer an estate-funded training programme for staff to improve their hospitality knowledge in an array of roles, from fisherman and truffle hunters to tennis coaches and stable hands for the 40 pure bred Spanish horses. While much of what is served in Ristorante al Castello is home-grown or foraged from the estate, such as pasta made from eggs gathered from on-site chickens, cold-pressed oil using olives from century-old groves, and flour made from wheat harvested on property and ground at a nearby water mill, Reschio relies on an extensive network of hyper-local suppliers, including organic Umbrian wines from small artisan vineyards. Locally made products are beautifully packaged and available to purchase from Bottega di Reschio - think hand-woven Florentine sunhats and linen shawls.
