A serene eco-sanctuary for the conscious traveller in the lush landscape of Bali

Tucked away amid the green forests of one of Bali’s most spectacular regions, Desa Hay is a sanctuary in the truest sense. Dotted among verdant gardens, the hotel’s six Jabu villas have been built in harmony with nature as well as with a keen eye for luxurious details.

An artisan-carved door opens onto a jungle-inspired garden surrounded by natural stone walls.  Sensitively constructed using natural materials, The Jabu has an impressive North Sumatra roof and floor-to-ceiling windows. Enjoy total privacy on the surrounding terrace with a plunge pool, swinging chair, and dining area for two. The premium Jabu includes an expansive terrace and garden area with lounge chairs and a hammock.

Experience the beauty of nature while lounging inside your Jabu. Listen to the birdsong from your hand-crafted, oversized bed with glass doors open to the warm air. Immerse yourself in rose petals and scented oils in your outdoor stone bathtub. Guests gather at Ijo restaurant for delicious dishes made with locally sourced produce served alongside mixologist-shaken cocktails. When dusk falls over the jungle and fairy lights twinkle in the gardens, there’s nowhere more enchanting.

Desa Hay is surrounded by extraordinary landscapes and wildlife that it works hard to protect with a strong sustainable ethos. Discover the volcanic sands of paradisiacal Echo Beach, lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, and take Instagram-worthy photos of Bali’s green rice fields. Café-hop in hipster Canggu, and soak up the stillness at the iconic Tanah Lot Temple. Then travel back to Desa Hay to recharge the body, soul, and mind.

Enjoy your stay!

SLH Considerate Collection

Environmentally Conscious

Sympathetically designed to be deeply in tune with its jungle surrounds, Desa Hay blends into the verdant forests of southern Bali where 40% of the resort’s land has purposefully been left as green space to let nature take its course. The remaining gardens are carefully cultivated by a local landscape architect who nurtures 70% native Balinese plants alongside Indonesian greenery, while any organic waste is composted by Urban Compost. The solar powered resort provides bamboo combs and toothbrushes and biodegradable slippers made from coconut husks, works closely with suppliers to remove single use plastic from the supply chain, sponsors organisations such as Sungai Watch to actively prevent plastics from polluting the ocean, and returns water into the water table by sponsoring the building of recharge wells.

Cultural Custodians

Throughout the construction of Desa Hay, the resort has been mindful to observe local customs and ensure all the appropriate ceremonies were performed and temples built, including an all-day opening ceremony (a Balinese cleansing ritual for new buildings known as 'Melaspas') for the project to be properly blessed which involved leading religious and political members of the community. The daily 'Mebanten' blessing is performed by staff by placing 'Canang Sari', traditional Balinese offerings of coconut leaves and flowers, throughout Desa Hay. Indonesian-inspired architectural details can be found at every turn, from the North Sumatran-style villa roofs to the traditional Javanese 'Joglo' restaurant, and all the artwork which decorates Desa Hay has been created by local artisans with a small placard crediting the artist.

Community Minded

Passionately believing that it is the people who put the heart and soul into Bali, Desa Hay exclusively hires Indonesian staff and takes great care to support the local community through a range of educational and charitable initiatives – including sponsoring the tuition and school supplies for the children at a local orphanage, with plans to extend this resource to the children of hotel staff. To deliver the greatest economic impact to the local community while spotlighting the beauty of Bali, Desa Hay works with local guides and drivers to offer cultural and spiritual activities from Balinese cooking classes run by the couple behind Feed Bali, to sunrise hikes up Mount Batur, walks through the Jatiluwih rice terraces, and respectful visits to the Mother Temple. All food is locally sourced and freshly-caught fish comes from a sustainable fishing provider.

Independent Minds

Independent Minds: The Kowaleski Family

Inspired by their son’s travels to Bali and a subsequent family holiday to this Indonesian island, the Kowaleski family dreamt up Desa Hay – a nature-immersed resort designed with the considerate traveller in mind. Though this cluster of Balinese villas beautifully blends into its jungle surroundings, it certainly stands out when it comes to sustainability. Almost half of Desa Hay’s land has been designated as green space to let nature take its course, which means you’ll feel completely in tune with the wilderness at this substantially solar-powered Considerate Collection resort.
