Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik

A waterside jewel with a dazzling heritage and views of Dubrovnik old town

When past guests have included kings, queens and Hollywood royalty, you know a hotel is going to be special. Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik is exactly that, pairing luxury style with a passion for hospitality that saw it welcome guests throughout a turbulent 20th century. After a captivating renovation, this boutique hotel remains one of the most enviable addresses in Dubrovnik.

This luxury hotel is one of two halves: the original 1913 royal villa and a sleek contemporary wing. This mingling of past and present is echoed in the interior styling by Franić-Šekoranja studio. Think understated colour themes with pops of bright citrus and decadent velvet furnishings. The real wonder of this hotel is where indoors meets out. Whether that’s sipping coffee on your balcony, enjoying breakfast on the sun-soaked Salin terrace, or a romantic dinner under the waterside arches at Prora restaurant.

Direct access to beach and a tranquil spa providing plenty of relaxing ways to fill your time. If those old town views have inspired you to explore, the ancient east gate is a short stroll away. Half the fun is getting lost, but Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik can also arrange a private tour, finishing with champagne at the top of mount Srđ. Sundowners at Abakus Piano Bar and fine seafood at Sensus restaurant will tempt you back before long.

Enjoy your stay!

Environmentally Conscious

For this Travelife Gold certified hotel, protecting the UNESCO heritage site of Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town and nearby islands of Lokrum and Mljet is at the forefront of its ‘light touch’ approach to tourism. Private sightseeing tours of the Old Town are available on request, followed by a short boat ride to the island of Lokrum which is home to a forest reserve of roaming wildlife and resident peacocks. Guests are given guidelines on how to follow the conservation-driven rules of the national park during their stay on in-room IPTV slides, as well as energy-saving tips to support Hotel Excelsior in its eco efforts. These include smart room controls which help the hotel reduce its overall energy consumption, installing e-vehicle charging stations and water-saving applications, and removing single-use plastic. The hotel’s parent company, Adriatic Luxury Hotels, has partnered with Dubrovnik & Mljet Eco Actions to support the annual cleaning of local marine ecosystems, in addition to donating to local ‘plastic-free Adriatic’ organisations which encourage guests to collect and repurpose plastic waste removed from the Adriatic coastline and seabed.

Cultural Custodians

With a wealth of UNESCO-protected history on its doorstep, Hotel Excelsior continuously educates guests on how to sensitively visit ancient sites of archaeological, cultural, and spiritual importance through guided tours and digital communication. Many of the original artefacts which were found during the hotel’s renovation have been preserved and displayed, while special parts of the heritage buildings were kept intact and cleverly blended with more contemporary architecture – which is why some of the hotel’s villas have been placed under cultural protection. Villa Odak – in the old wing of Hotel Excelsior - is a former royal villa which has hosted international figures from Queen Elizabeth II to King Olaf of Norway, and a landmark building in its own right. Villa Agave was constructed on the foundations of the 16th century St. Lazarus chapel, where two of the original walls remain and a valuable treasury of fine art and antiques has been preserved – and later became the summer house of famed archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. Adriatic Luxury Hotels also sponsors a list of cultural institutions and artistic festivals, including the Dubrovnik Museum of Modern Art.

Community Minded

Locality and authenticity are at the heart of Hotel Excelsior’s ethos. Guests can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Dubrovnik and its artisan community through a number of locally-run experiences – including a private tour of the Ston oyster farm on a traditional fisherman’s boat, where you’ll learn how to gather oysters from the sea and open them the ‘old-fashioned’ way. A local farmer also welcomes guests into his agritourism estate in nearby Konavle, to gather ingredients from the garden, fresh eggs from the coop, and milk the goat in preparation for traditional cooking classes – accompanied by stories from the farmer’s 500-year family tree. The hotel’s chefs take great interest in the provenance of their ingredients, to reduce food miles and support the local supply chain, featuring traditional local delicacies on the menu such as ‘mantala’ – a Dubrovnik fruit dessert – washed down with a carefully curated wine list from local vineyards.

outstanding service and view

outstanding service, amazing view and convenient location. Spa/sauna is disappointing and pretty noisy. Americanized lunch menu with burger, sandwiches and no local food

The only major flaw was the wrong bill and check out

The nice dinner and friendly attitudes of Mr. Petar Obad.

Nice, but not small hotel. Rooms at Villa Odak very nice. Restaurant for dinner could be better.

Close to the old town, just a few minutes walking. Bar is very nice with nice modern atmosphere.

Gem of a hotel

Very much appreciated the generous upgrade to the Villa. The room was super well equipped and had great seas views and was luxurious. Being able to jump straight into the sea is such a bonus as you can avoid busy beaches. Super near the old town
