Hotel Rangá
Log cabins given the luxury treatment in out-of-this-world South Iceland
The outdoor geothermal hot tubs with volcano views. The wraparound glass windows in the gourmet restaurant. The observatory – and resident astronomers – for star spotting and Northern Lights hunting. Every inch of Hotel Rangá celebrates its awe-inspiring setting. Whether you visit in heavy snow or when wildflowers are springing up, a genuinely warm welcome awaits at this one-of-a-kind boutique retreat.
Hotel Rangá is a cross between a hunting lodge and (palatial) log cabin. So your bedroom or suite will be a snug yet spacious hideaway crafted from wood – with staggering views. There’s a lounge and bar for hot chocolates or hot toddies. While the games room, with its stag horn ‘chandelier’, pool table and puzzles, is all set up for cosy (or competitive) nights in.

This luxury hotel is perfectly positioned for the Golden Circle and glacier expeditions. In fact, there’s a dizzying array of activities at your feet: from snowmobiling to super jeep safaris, dog-sledding to horse riding, caving to fishing. Adventures here don’t just mean getting out in the great outdoors though. Take your taste buds on a culinary journey back at the Hotel Rangá restaurant, with an evening of creative Icelandic fare.

Environmentally Conscious
From providing guests with 100% recyclable lunchboxes to take out on their excursions, to installing charging stations for hybrid and electric vehicles, Hotel Rangá has thought of everything when it comes to adventure sustainability. The hotel operates exclusively with green and renewable energy, including electricity produced by hydroelectric power plants. Naturally heated hot spring water is delivered from a nearby geothermal source to heat the hotel, which has been constructed with materials which insulate the hotel by up to 50% more than the average new build in Iceland. Energy efficient light bulbs are used throughout the hotel, while motion sensors in the corridors help reduce overall power consumption. Most recently, the hotel acquired Iceland’s first fully electric airplane, and installed 10 electric charging stations for complimentary guest use.
Cultural Custodians
Alongside providing a calendar of cultural events happening in the area during your stay, Hotel Rangá takes guests to the sites of where the famous Njáls Saga, a cornerstone of Icelandic folklore, is thought to have taken place. The hotel is also passionate about highlighting Icelandic artwork, and has collected over 200 original pieces from local painters and craftsmen for over a decade. Almost every room is decorated with saga-inspired murals, from galloping horses and sleepy sheep to purple lupins. The bed in the Icelandic Master Suite features wood carvings by local artist Sigríður Jóna Kristjánsdóttir and is dressed in what is probably the largest hand knitted Icelandic wool sweater, Lopapeysa, ever made.
Community Minded
Guests at Hotel Rangá will be welcomed by a team of local Icelanders, many of whom have been working at the hotel for years and live in surrounding townships. Closely connected to the Icelandic farming and fishing communities, the farmer’s market concept menu at The Rangá Restaurant uses seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from Southern Iceland’s many geothermal greenhouse farms and sustainable fisheries. Guests are encouraged to try Hákarl, the national dish of Iceland, washed down with Brennivín, an ancient tradition which has been passed down the generations since Iceland’s settlement. The hotel also offers an extensive list of outdoor activities curated by local guides, from horse-riding to glacier walking.

Excellent place to experience Iceland
We were so excited that we got to see the Northern Lights (definitely appreciated the wakeup call!). The hotel feels like an Icelandic hunting lodge, and we loved the breakfast.
