Perched like a cherry on top of the island, the hotel comprises a large main house with three bedrooms and a cosy annex. Guests may book a single room or the entire island for ultimate solitude. The interior is an ode to Nordic crafts – a Scandi folk-style haven with a kitchen at its heart and a botanical library bar for experimental cocktail making. Each room is shaped around the view: the Moon Room offers cliff views and slanted ceilings, while the Ocean Room sits at sea level with a piano overlooking the ocean.

Guests can borrow bicycles to explore Midtoy at their own pace, keeping their footprint light. The surrounding seaweed beds are considered part of the hotel’s garden, with many guests donning snorkels to help forage alongside chef Antje, who transforms the harvest into creative dishes. A fully vegan kitchen, rooted in local produce and wild foraging, reflects deep respect for nature’s cycles — while natural ventilation and energy efficiency ensure comfort in harmony with the environment.

Cultural Custodians

Seen as stewards rather than developers, the team behind Lilloey Lindenberg restored an existing island house instead of building anew, preserving its original structures and following the principles of traditional Norwegian design: simple, functional, and deeply connected to nature. Many of the furnishings — beds, sofas, and custom pieces — are crafted by carpenters in Bergen, while neighbouring island artisans contribute textiles that bring warmth and authenticity. Seasonal customs and national holidays are marked with guests, making cultural immersion part of the stay. The island shop showcases ceramics, textiles, and glassware by local artisans, alongside schnapps distilled by a women-led collective.

Community Minded

Deeply embedded in its surroundings, Lilloey Lindenberg prioritises local people and partnerships at every turn. Staff are recruited from nearby communities, often newcomers to hospitality, and are trained with opportunities to grow into leadership roles. Every excursion — whether kayaking, glassblowing, or birdwatching — draws on the expertise of local guides and makers, ensuring the economic benefit stays close to home. The hotel’s culinary partnerships include sourcing from Bakstehuset, a family-owned, traditional Norwegian wood-fired bakery still run by the Magnussen-Kvarme family. Guests are invited to join convivial gatherings such as the KELP CLUB, a pop-up dining and music event for locals and guests alike, ensuring the island thrives as both community and destination.
