On a deserted black lava sand beach, this GreenSign certified guest collective feels a world away from Bali’s overtouristed trails. Sympathetically built, solar powered treehouses are tucked between frangipani fronds down a quiet, temple-lined track, in a hidden clearing which has been transformed from a banana tree monoculture into a diverse jungle bursting with wildlife through biodiversity-minded landscaping – beyond the forest, the path continues to grasslands where every grass species found in Bali has been planted. Staff are eco-equipped with ongoing sustainability training, working closely with Jiwa Garden to establish the hotel’s permaculture garden and sustainable waterways, as well as collaborating with Mission Pawsible, a local animal rescue organisation. The plant-based, zero-waste kitchen is supplied from local organic farms, and dishes from different Indonesian regions are spotlighted each evening – food waste is then composted and used as fertiliser within the grounds. Guests will find wooden toothbrushes, bamboo toilet paper, refillable water bottles, and jars of homemade vegan marshmallows in the rooms, and can explore the undiscovered west coast on the hotel’s e-bicycles and e-scooters.

Cultural Custodians

Before LOST LINDENBERG put down its roots, the owners had been in contact with the local community for several years to learn more about Balinese culture, and ensure that the resort’s architecture would be in keeping with the surrounding temples in Pekutatan and Medewi. When looking for handicraft, art and decoration for the resort, everything was sourced from within Indonesia – and where the local suppliers struggled to meet the brand’s requests for higher quality items such as bespoke furniture, LOST LINDENBERG worked with their architect to create artisan training programmes for locals rather than outsourcing. The curation and use of artistic works constitutes an essential part in all of LINDENBERG’s concepts, here playing with the eclecticism between Indonesian tradition, nature and urban lifestyles. To this end, the LINDENBERG team sourced local Indonesian antiques from all eras, such as vases, baskets and statues. These items contrast with contemporary photographs by Indonesian artist Prawobo and British photographer Annie Collinge, among others. At check-in, guests are invited to experience a small ceremony in one of the nearby temples, as well as helping the resort’s staff to prepare daily Balinese blessings.

Community Minded

Over the years, LOST LINDENBERG has developed a close relationship with the Pekutatan community, the small, neighbouring Hindu village which is said to be ruled by nature and sacred spirits. The operational team is almost entirely from Indonesia – with many staff hired directly from Pekutatan itself – who benefit from the brand’s ongoing and in-depth hospitality training. Making waves in the local surfing community, the hotel has teamed up with professional surfer Muklis Anwar to found The LOST Bunch, an educational programme supporting young surfers from around the area with surfing classes and lessons in English and hospitality. Through surf competitions and courses, the project is also made accessible to the guests, creating a platform of encounter. LOST LINDENBERG is considered to be an ‘open house’ rather than a ‘closed resort’, where events for the community are regularly hosted – including cinema screenings, beach BBQs, and live music nights – as well as encouraging local initiatives such as weekly beach clean-ups. When it comes to tours and activities, the resort exclusively works with local operators and village members, from ‘secret river tours’ with Putu and his family from the village to sunrise yoga sessions with a local instructor.

Special place far off it all

Stepping through the wall and crossing the garden towards the buildings really prepare you for what is to come. Lost follows its concept and design to a T, all supported by an awesome team of locals. It almost feels like an island by itself. To quote a team member - "you wouldnt expect something like Read more[SPLIT]Read lessLost in West Bali". No you don't, but its awesome that it is there.

Beautiful piece of paradise!

From the unqiue enterance thru a secret garden jungle to our "treehouse" room, it was the perfect getaway. The staff, the property, the food ... the whole experience was magical. How's the serenity

All of the ingredients are homegrown or sourced from nearby organic permacultures. Float above the jungle on the teak deck of LOST LINDENBERG’s secret jungle spa, Gladak. Built in the steep-roofed style of traditional houses originally used for storing crops, the calming sanctuary is the perfect spot to unwind. Restorative Balinese massages will smooth out surf-tangled muscles as chirrups from the undergrowth soothe the mind. Treatments take inspiration from local rituals and aromatherapy, wrapping the spa in heady scents of chamomile, lavender, lemongrass and bergamot.
