Escape the everyday at an exclusive Fijian retreat

Searching for a bona fide island paradise? Look no further. Nanuku Resort’s 500 acres of Fijian beachfront, swaying palms and barefoot luxury is the real deal. Take refuge from the everyday in one of the resort’s residences, suites or villas dotted among lush gardens, and immerse yourself into this pristine corner of the Pacific Ocean.

Wherever you lay your head at Nanuku Resort, expect to be absolutely pampered. Suites have sweeping ocean views, villas come with private pools and gardens, while multi-bedroom residences can house the whole family on the beachfront or clifftop. Interiors are contemporary and airy, looking out over shimmering Beqa Lagoon. Just-caught seafood from its crystalline waters is the star of the menu at Kanavata Restaurant and Lounge. But you can also dine alfresco on a secluded beach, high up on the cliffside or tucked into the treetops. Simply say the word and Nanuku’s team will make the magic happen.

Environmentally Conscious

Nanuku Resort goes to great lengths to keep its beaches clean and surrounding waters pristine, from regular clear-ups to ongoing coral reef conservation and mangrove planting projects. To date, over 10,000 mangrove trees have been planted in a neighbouring village to help reduce coastal erosion from storm surges and cyclones. Guests can lend a hand in the planting process, while learning about mangroves’ essential role as a nesting and breeding habitat for an incredible array of fish and shellfish. Join the resident marine scientist to plant and tag your own coral garden on Nanuku’s house reef, tracking its progress on return trips year after year. The resort’s private beach is used as a turtle nesting site, while Nanuku staff work closely with the local university to collect DNA samples for turtle conservation research. The grounds are filled with local tropical flowers and native trees, and guests can explore on foot, bicycle, or the traditional bilibili river raft.

Cultural Custodians

Nanuku’s carefully curated activities programme (overseen by two full-time cultural ambassadors) showcases the rich, authentic culture of the Fijian people, immersing guests in ancient traditions and local customs through weekly cooking classes, and daily weaving workshops with resident artisans who craft baskets and accessories using the leaves of the pandanus tree. As music and performance are central to Fijian culture, guests can join a traditional ‘meke’ (warrior dance ceremony), to the beating of lali drums followed by a dance called the ‘taralala’. You can also witness the ancient Fijian art of fire-walking, performed each week by descendants of the original Sawau tribe who walk barefoot across a large fire-pit of smouldering river stones and celebrate with folk singing, dancing, acrobatics, and more. Guests are also provided with sarongs and briefed on respectful interactions before entering local villages, while traditional thatching and carving is still used on some Nanuku buildings.

Community Minded

Originally conceived to be a bastion of its community, Nanuku Resort – which is exclusively staffed by Fijian citizens - creates employment opportunities for local villagers and directly supports small, local businesses by purchasing locally wherever possible. Nanuku’s activities are run by local guides and often include lunch in a nearby village which is catered by various women’s groups. Discover Fiji’s vibrant capital city through the eyes of a Fijian with a private driver who will also serve as your local tour guide, exploring the expansive municipal market, filled with stall after stall selling just-off-the-boat seafood and fish, and farm-fresh fruit and vegetables. Local dishes are incorporated into Nanuku’s daily menu, and a full traditional buffet is hosted every week with island delicacies, from ‘kokoda’ (Fijian ceviche with spiced coconut milk) to lovo-roasted meats and banana-leaf wrapped fish.

And, to dial up the romance, there’s nothing quite like a candle-lit picnic.

Elegant Kanavata restaurant harnesses the bounty of Beqa Lagoon’s waters, serving up fresh lobster, snapper, mahi mahi and more, with a spin on Pacific Rim flavours. But with private dining experiences at Nanuku Resort you can take your table to wherever suits your mood. Request a romantic meal for two on a secluded beach, or in the treetops. Or settle down in front of the resort’s 12-foot outdoor cinema screen with popcorn (and a private chef) for a movie night to remember.

Spa

As tonics go, it’s hard to beat the warm air, blue skies and clear waters of Fiji. But if nature needs a helping hand, turn to Nanuku Resort’s own wellness guru. Treatments are inspired by the island’s centuries-old healing traditions, using heavenly blends of local oils, herbs and leaves. Bliss out with a massage in a private beachside suite, soothed by the tropical breeze, or take to the treetops on a peaceful platform suspended amid the branches of a 70-year-old dilo tree.
