Wa Ale Resort
Luscious jungle meets sustainable luxury in undiscovered Myanmar

Step off the speedboat that takes you to the island and you’ll be greeted at the shoreline by Wa Ale’s staff with a cool drink. The jungle appears to follow you inside, each room decorated in earthy green and beige hues and natural wood finishes. Stay in tented beach villas, treetop villas or beach houses, each with private decking and unobstructed views of the ocean. Here, you can relax on your veranda or treat yourself to a massage. Outdoor showers are nestled between the mangroves and banyan trees, lit by the stars. After a rest and refresh, visit the pavilion and share a communal meal of Asian or Mediterranean cuisine with other guests. Or dine at your own private table, enjoying every bite as you look out over the ocean.
Wa Ale Resort’s location is unrivalled – and an adventure lover’s dream. It’s easy to get to know the rest of the island. Expect plenty of snorkelling, world-class scuba diving, and hiking trails through the lush jungle. Top of the to-do list – dive down to the coral reefs and swim through the little-known caves. When the sun begins to set, return to the hotel for an evening under the stars.
Enjoy your stay!

Environmentally Conscious
Wrapped in the leafy folds of virgin jungle on a remote 5,000 acre island, Wa Ale was born out of a fierce desire to protect its pristine Lampi Marine National Park surroundings. The solar-powered resort pledges to annually donate 20% of net profits and 2% of room revenues to the Lampi Foundation, which was established by Wa Ale to help fund social welfare and conservation projects on the Myeik Archipelago. These nature-focused initiatives include an ongoing sea turtling nesting programme (the Lampi Foundation opened the park’s first sea turtle hatchery), and installing boat moorings to prevent coral destruction. Not a single tree was cut down when the resort was built, so buildings blend seamlessly into the rainforest canopy and a sea breeze keeps the air conditioning-free, safari-style tents refreshingly cool.
Cultural Custodians
Guests can get a taste for Burmese culture by signing up to one of the resort’s complimentary cooking classes, led by Wa Ale’s local chef who makes use of homegrown herbs and organic ingredients plucked from the on-site vegetable garden – such as lemongrass, eggplant, and island turnips. Ask one of the friendly housekeepers to show you how to apply ‘thanaka’, a tree bark paste used throughout Myanmar as an all-natural SPF which is also said to keep mosquitoes at bay. You’ll get under the skin of this golden skin balm which has been used for centuries by Burmese women and children in Wa Ale’s daily ‘thanaka’ demonstrations – and likely see it painted on to many local faces you meet along the way.
Community Minded
This mangrove-fringed island may feel off-grid, but community spirit is at the heart of the Lampi Foundation, which helps fund and provide training for the local medical clinic, alongside supporting several schools in the nearby villages of Salet Galet and May Kyone Galet by sending supplies, equipment, and medicine to the local inhabitants. Guests are invited to visit nearby fishing villages twice a week to learn more about the island way of life and tuck into straight-from-the-sea snacks with the friendly villagers, and can join weekly visits to the hilltop monastery at Salet Galet to meet the resident monks. While many of the dishes at Wa Ale are made using homegrown ingredients, the resort makes an effort to purchase locally wherever possible – including fresh fruit and vegetables from the colourful Kawthaung markets.

On a remote archipelago off the coast of Myanmar, Wa Ale Resort is redefining the private island experience. Founded by teak furniture designer and craftsman Christopher Kingsley and his wife Farina, a culinary instructor and cookbook author, this previously untouched island is in the safest possible pair of hands on the design and food front – but it’s the couple’s passion for purpose-driven, positive-impact travel which really sets this Considerate Collection resort apart.
