Introducing Hermanus

Hermanus is the perfect blend of untamed nature and sophistication. One of the world’s top whale-watching destinations, this historic fishing town is also a heavy hitter when it comes to the other South African charms: excellent food and wine, and a dramatic ‘explore-me-now’ landscape. Tick off the big marine five, put your hiking boots to good use, or just soak up the sea air and relax.

Things to do

NATURE
From June to December every year, southern right whales come to the warm waters of Walker Bay. Nothing quite beats seeing these beautiful creatures up close from a boat, though you can also spy them from Hermanus’ spectacular clifftop path. But it doesn’t stop there. Get some serious natural thrills and cage dive with great white sharks. Go kayaking with seals and dolphins. Or see the region’s smaller (and arguably cuter) inhabitants with a tour of the penguin colony at Stony Point.

WINE
Hermanus is a wine lovers’ cornucopia. A cool Atlantic Ocean breeze turns out some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Hermanus – as well as the uniquely South African “Pinotage”. And with the aptly-named Hemel-en-Aarde (“Heaven and Earth”) Valley along its famous vineyard route, the mountain and coastal views are as tantalising as the wine itself.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Wine-tasting aside, Hermanus is ideal for family fun. The town’s Old Harbour area has three fascinating museums, as well as the wide and welcoming Grotto Beach. Look inland to the Fernkloof Nature Reserve for picnic spots and hiking trails winding through the indigenous fynbos plant. And if you fancy upping the adrenaline, there’s archery, mountain biking, quad biking or ziplining to choose from.
