Things to do
NATURE
Pack a sun hat and grab your binoculars, because the forests, lakes and savannahs of the Arusha region are teeming with wildlife. From snoring lions resting in the shade of a baobab tree to herds of graceful gazelle, the experience of seeing Africa’s mighty inhabitants in their element is unmatched. Arusha’s own national park has the world’s largest population of giraffe, while not far away, the light-filled plains of the Serengeti unfold in untamed glory.
CULTURE
Vibrant and colourful, the Masai Market in Arusha city is the place to seek out traditional crafts, jewellery and curios – and to perfect your haggling technique. Then while away the afternoon in the Cultural Heritage Centre, an impressive building housing art and artifacts from across east Africa. Further afield, the intriguing Masai way of life is shared first-hand at a number of cultural and visitor centres.
ACTIVITIES
Arusha’s towering peaks and expansive lakes make it playground for adventurous types. Arusha city acts as a base camp for climbers setting their sights on Kilimanjaro’s summit. But for gentler (but no-less rewarding) hikes, one-day walking tours of the mountain’s foothills take in plenty of breathtaking vistas. For game viewing from a different perspective, glide across Lake Manyara on a canoe safari.
