Slow down, relax and look around you – Alajuela’s biodiverse scenery is well worth the pause

In Costa Rica’s lush northern highlands, Alajuela brims with possibility. Here, volcanoes watch over emerald forests, rivers tumble through leafy valleys, and wildlife roams in impressive abundance. It’s a land where cloud meets canopy and days are best spent admiring nature. But there’s equally a chance for adrenalin fuelled adventure, and a dash of history too.

Things to do

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Experience the rare and exotic in Alajuela’s pristine rainforests, home to sloths, butterflies, toucans, monkeys, and the elusive but enchanting ocelot. Admire the local flora and fauna via foot, bicycle tour or kayak, then take a moment to relax in the Tabacón Hot Springs. These naturally-heated mineral pools are warmed by the energy of Arenal Volcano. Take your pick of temperature and keep an eye out for hummingbirds as you soak.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
If you have a head for heights, find your inner Tarzan and join a jungle ziplining tour – the best way to truly immerse yourself in the forest. Rope bridges are another common sight in Alajuela, adding an element of adventure to walking tours and hikes. And many trails traverse dramatic volcanic landscapes, where ancient ebony lava flows are slowly being reclaimed by nature. To freshen up, make for the stunning cascades of La Fortuna Waterfall – you can swim in the deep green pool at its base.

CULTURE
The roots of Alajuela’s history run as deep as its rivers, evident in towns and villages that feel untouched by modern times. Visit mountain town Zarcero, where craft stalls and small bakeries overlook stunning panoramas (Zarcero is also known for its delightful topiary garden). Or head to San Ramon to wander historic buildings, quiet cafes and traditional local markets. Meanwhile, artistic Sarchí is famous for oxcart-making, and is considered the craft capital of Costa Rica.
