Introducing La Fortuna De San Carlos

This small and charming Costa Rican town has a grand claim to fame. It’s your gateway to the spectacular Arenal Volcano National Park. Boasting a verdant rainforest, two volcanoes and an array of colourful wildlife, it’s easy to see what draws people to this part of Costa Rica. But look closer and you’ll discover more than the picture-perfect sights. Take a dip in natural hot springs. Trek onto the slopes and seek out fresh lava flows. Fly above the treetops on a zip wire.

Things to do

NATURE
If the natural world fills you with curiosity, La Fortuna couldn’t be a better place for a getaway. Make the short trip from the town to Arenal Volcano National Park and step into a world of new sights, sounds and scents. Spot delicate orchids and slow-moving sloths amongst the trees. Hear the cries of spider monkeys. Hike to the magnificent La Fortuna waterfall, which falls from a giddy height of 70km (and don’t forget your swimsuit). To really get your heart racing, make a final ascent to the crater lake of the dormant Chato Volcano.

SPA
The region’s volcanoes don’t just provide magnificent views. They’re also the source of the area’s natural hot springs and world-class spa experiences. There are plenty of thermal rivers and waterfalls to explore in a few main resorts, with lush greenery as your backdrop. You can also revive after a hot day in the jungle with a signature massage. And when you’ve found the pool (and temperature) for you, simply sit back and let the health-giving minerals in the water do their work.

SPORT
If all of that sounds a little too relaxing, La Fortuna de San Carlos and the Arenal region is also the perfect place for adventure. Soar above the trees on a zipline. Take in incredible views of Lake Arenal from the suspended bridges at Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. Or experience the jungle in a whole new way and go white-water rafting down the Balsa river. There are hundreds of tours and activities that get you closer to nature – and get the adrenaline flowing.

Top Tip from SLH

Go horseback riding through Arenal Volcano National Park before soaking tired muscles in natural hot springs, a refreshing watermelon mojito in your hand.
