Things to do
HISTORY
San Andres offers fantastic proximity to a wide range of world class archaeological sites, showcasing the beauty of ancient Mayan civilisation. Pack your walking boots, and set off to explore the temples of Tikal National Park, one of the most significant ancient Maya cities, located just an hour away. For lake views alongside historic discoveries, don’t miss Yaxhá, another impressive local site. And if you want to stay closer to home base, smaller ruins such as Tayasal are every bit as special.
NATURE
Surrounded by lush forest, San Andres offers a fantastic array of biodiversity and ecotourism opportunities abound. Howler monkeys, toucans and crocodiles all await the intrepid explorer, alongside a wealth of aquatic life darting through crystal clear lake waters. Lakeside trails weave their way through the trees, climbing to stunning viewpoints where you can luxuriate in sky-saturating sunsets. The Biotopo Cerro Cahuí reserve is a must for the avid birdwatcher.
CULTURE
It’s impossible to miss the canary-yellow church, perched in the heart of San Andres’s charming central plaza. The church serves as a cultural hub, at the heart of many local festivities. San Andres retains a strong connection to its Maya roots, and you can learn about the Itza people, one of the last Maya groups to resist Spanish conquest. Leave a little room in your luggage, as no one leaves the local markets, selling textiles, ceramics and other Maya inspired crafts, empty-handed.
