HISTORY
Bowral became popular in the 19th century as a summer retreat for Sydney’s high society, who left behind a collection of stately manor houses, manicured gardens and parkland. Stroll around Retford Park, a striking pink Italianate manor and former home of James Fairfax, which houses his significant collection of historic art and furniture. Or explore Corbett Gardens, which dates back to 1911 and is home to Bowral’s annual tulip festival.
CULTURE
As the largest town in the Southern Highlands, Bowral is a hub for cultural events, from live music to art. Visit Ngunungula, a contemporary gallery on the Retford Park estate showcasing the work of the Gundungurra First Nations people. Day-to-day, Bowral is somewhere to take things slow and hop between cafes, wineries and farm-to-table restaurants. And with its historic charm, it’s no surprise that the town is a hotspot for antique hunters and independent craftspeople.
NATURE
The cool climate of the Southern Highlands beckons you to lace up your hiking boots and explore. Not far from Bowral you’ll find Morton National Park, for hikes up to spectacular waterfalls including Fitzroy and Belmore falls. If you want to really stretch your legs, visit Mt Gibraltar Reserve to hike up through tranquil woodlands to the rim of the collapsed volcano. Grab a bike for a day of cycling to local cool climate vineyards. Or spend a few hours learning about beekeeping at the Bowral Honey Farm, complete with honey tasting.
