Things to do
CULTURE
Cagnes-sur-Mer has grown up around Haut-de-Cagnes, a hilltop village dating back to the Middle Ages. With its cobbled alleys, picturesque castle and sweeping views to the mountains and sea, it became a hub for Impressionist painters. Follow the art trail to see work by artists such as Derain and Renoir alongside the views that inspired them. You can even visit Renoir’s own house and tranquil garden. Chateau Grimaldi hosts exhibitions of artwork from around Provence, as well as open-air classical concerts during summer months.
BEACHES AND WATER
Whether relaxation or exhilaration is on the cards, you’ll find it at Cagnes-sur-Mer. The long pebble beach has sun loungers, bars and restaurants, ideal for whiling away afternoons with a cool drink and a good book. If you fancy something a little more active, why not whip across the waves on a jet ski? Thrill-seekers of all ages can also try wakeboarding, waterskiing, or even kitesurfing.
DAY TRIPS
From Cagnes-sur-Mer you’ll be well placed to explore more of Provence and the Côte d’Azur. Visit neighbouring Nice to browse the designer boutiques and artisan wine shops lining Rue Paradis. Or get back to nature with a trip to Mercantour National Park, also nearby. Here you can hike through forests and mountains, and even see ancient carvings and Bronze Age cave paintings.
