Introducing Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada is one of Spain’s most alluring destinations. It’s a captivating region of snowy peaks and authentic culture, with the coast not far away. In between there are spectacular landscapes dotted with charming villages to explore on a hiking or biking adventure. Beautiful Granada is also nearby, with its breathtaking Alhambra and mouth-watering tapas. It all adds up to an escape with everything: activity and adventure, culture and indulgence.

Things to do

With a name meaning ‘snowy range’, it comes as little surprise Sierra Nevada is ski territory. There are over 100 pistes, making this a ski resort suited to beginners and pros alike. Work your way up to Pico del Veleta – the ‘weather vane’. At over 3000m it’s the range’s second highest peak, and promises an exhilarating run.

Soaring mountains, glacial lakes, winding rivers – Sierra Nevada National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Swap skis for hiking boots and set out to discover the region’s array of flora and fauna. You might spot wildcats and ibex in the hills, eagles and kestrels in the air, and rare wildflowers at your feet.

Round up the little ones and head to Mirlo Blanco. This winter wonderland has an ice rink, mini-ski and snowboards made for kids, as well as toboggans. Hop aboard the Russian Sleigh to ride a rollercoaster with a snowy twist, or take on the slalom on a bicycle. For something a little less active, but just as magical, there are horse-riding schools offering tours through the Sierra Nevada countryside.

Top Tip from SLH

Sierra Nevada is the spiritual home of Serrano ham, or ‘ham of the mountains’. Sample it in fine dining restaurants and boutique hotel eateries, or travel to the village of Trevélez to get it from the source
