Things to do
SKIING
With an altitude of 1,800m, compared to other major Swiss resorts, Arosa Lenzerheide guarantees you the highest average snowfall every year, plenty of reliable, modern lifts for less queuing, and beautifully maintained pistes. The sunnier Weisshorn side can make conditions more variable later in the season, so head for the shadier Hornli mountain for the best snow quality. And while there are a few advanced trails to keep thrill-seekers and snowboarders happy, it’s the many easy, wide runs and nursery slopes that make Arosa such a firm favourite with young families.
NATURE
As you hike towards Schwellisee lake, listen out for tinkling cow bells and meltwaters tumbling down the glaciers. The Alps are reflected in its turquoise surface with such clarity, it’s hard to tell where the mountains begin and the sky ends. For some Swiss animal magic, take a morning stroll along the Eichhörnliweg Squirrel Path. This is when the resident wild squirrels are at their hungriest and will happily take nuts from your hand. While at Arosa Bear Sanctuary in Weisshorn high-hanging wooden bridges let you safely watch these majestic beasts that have been rescued from circuses, ruling over their beautiful Alpine home.
ACTIVITIES
Whether you’re in Arosa for the ski season, or hiking and biking in the flower-filled summer months – it’s an all-year-round destination. History buffs should stop by the well-preserved Bergkirchli mountain chapel that dates back to 1492. And if swimming in mountain lakes sounds tempting, relax on the Untersee bathing beach, complete with sandy shore, a sunbathing lawn, solar-heated paddling pool, 50-metre-slide, table tennis and a garden restaurant.
