Environmentally Conscious
Championing the ‘Mana Tiaki’ ethos of the Cook Islands, which means ‘guardianship with a sacred purpose’, Pacific Resort Aitutaki takes great care to preserve its natural paradise. The sustainably-built beachfront rooms blend with the native flora, fauna, and black volcanic rocks, old deck chairs have been recycled into hammocks, and fallen coconut trees turned into raised garden beds. Local orchids and other native tropical flowers bloom in the grounds (look out for the educational signage), irrigated by recycled rainwater which is harvested and stored in a large on-site reservoir. The single-use plastic-free resort has installed clever water and energy-saving measures, and offers bicycles to guests looking to explore the island – as well as a self-guided eco-aquatic trail, a non-motorised way to discover the lagoon’s marine life. Delve deeper into the resort’s marine conservation efforts by asking about their ongoing coral restoration project, which combines scientific research and innovative techniques with guest and community engagement.
Cultural Custodians
The Pacific Resort Hotel Group is a gold member and stalwart supporter of the Cook Islands Te Ipukarea Society, an environmental organisation which closely guards ‘Ipukarea’ (‘our heritage’). The resort sponsors island events, including Te Maeva Nui, a week-long annual festival which celebrates local arts, crafts, music, song, dance, and food. Guests are welcomed at the resort with a chilled ‘nu’ (young coconut), and you’ll find traditional ‘Kia Orana’ cards in rooms translating English to Maori. Staff uniforms are designed using island prints and fabrics, the bed covers are traditional ‘tivaevae’ (artisan Polynesian quilts), and native ‘Tamanu’ trees are planted around the property (which are used to make local cultural drums and musical instruments). The bungalows have been built in traditional Polynesian style, with thatched roofs, natural timbers, and large balconies with direct beach access. Pick up some treasured black pearls in the gift shop, and enjoy Cook Island music in the restaurant and bar areas.
Community Minded
The resort strongly believes that tourism should enhance and enrich both the traveller and the community with every visit. Staff are hired from the local community wherever possible, and rewarded for their involvement in social and environmental initiatives. For example, several members of the team are volunteers for the Cook Islands Red Cross and fire brigade, as well as using their time to help maintain and refurbish local clubhouses. The resort supports the BSP’s annual Christmas tree-giving charity, and sends gifts to children in the Pa Enua (outer islands). Alongside growing organic produce on-site to supply the restaurant’s seasonally-changing menu, local-grown fruit and root vegetables are sourced from local farmers, and lagoon-caught seafood from island fishermen. Guests are encouraged to ‘support local’ throughout their stay, by purchasing from small market stalls, using local guides for lagoon cruises and sailing tours, and even bringing stationery in your suitcase for local schools.
