Sun, spices and vitamin sea – Bentota’s endless shores promise both relaxation and excitement

Bentota is known for its spectacular beaches, but this bustling resort town has many charms beyond its golden sands and corkscrew palms. Between the dazzling Indian Ocean and a meandering, mangrove-lined river, ancient temples and incredible wildlife, there’s plenty to satisfy beach lovers and culture hounds alike.

Things to do

NATURE AND WILDLIFE
Head to the river for a wildlife-spotting safari along Bentota Ganga. Boats purr gently past towering mangrove roots and snake-like vines, while dappled sunlight filters through an emerald canopy. Knowledgeable guides will point out colourful birds and majestic sea eagles, sunbathing lizards and playful monkeys. For an even closer brush with the locals, Bentota has its very own turtle hatchery. In an effort to preserve these endangered creatures, a dedicated team oversees hatchings and rehabilitations. Cue a host of tiny turtles that will make your heart melt.

FOOD AND DRINK
From perfectly spiced seafood to creamy piña coladas, Bentota’s food scene is a tour de force. Fish and fruit don’t come fresher. The day’s catch sizzles on beach-front barbecues by nightfall, while local markets are full to the brim with a rainbow of sun-ripened produce. Relax in a beachside restaurant and sample a warming coconut curry, or try Kottu Roti – a popular local street food – while on the go. And with several rooftop bars to choose from, you can enjoy a cooling sunset cocktail in a different spot every day of the week.

BEACHES
If relaxation is on your agenda, Bentota’s beaches will provide. Ventura beach stretches for miles, giving beachgoers plenty of choice for their patch of paradise. Steadily rolling breakers are ideal for body boarding and surf lessons in high season, while bigger swells come during the shoulder seasons. North of the river mouth, Moragalla beach is another haven of gold sands, and – thanks to an enclosing reef – calm, shallow waters.
