Explore glorious nature without the crowds in Wilpattu, Sri Lanka’s land of lakes

Wilpattu National Park lies on Sri Lanka’s north-western edge, a stunning sanctuary where the sound of chirping cicadas fills the air and majestic leopards roam. The scenery is breathtaking, the biodiversity rich and unspoiled. Dive into a safari, Sri Lanka style, and wonder at a corner of the world that’s still blessed with nature’s splendour.

Things to do

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The western side of the park is deeply forested, and a birdwatcher’s paradise. Spot Asian paradise flycatchers, the crimson-breasted barbet, and Malabar pied hornbills – exotic names matched by equally exotic plumage. Beyond the trees lie plains, dunes, wetlands and scrub. Making their home in these diverse habitats; Sri Lankan elephant, spotted deer, buffalo, sambar, mongoose and the elusive sloth bear.

WATER

Wilpattu translates as ‘land of the lakes’, as the park is dotted with small lakes, pristine ponds and watering holes in every direction. The abundance of lakes and rivers also makes for excellent water-based safaris. Get close to the action on a guided kayak tour, where you may spot turtles, amphibians and even small crocodiles. Where the park meets the Indian Ocean, embark on a boat trip to catch a glimpse of migrating dolphins and whales.

CULTURE
Ancient wonders await at Anuradhapura, which lies east of the park via a scenic drive. Documented as the first kingdom on Sri Lanka, the roots of this fascinating city go back to the 4th century BC. Sacred trees and imposing temples draw pilgrims from around the world, but the city still has off-the-beaten track appeal. The city is large, so hire a bike and wheel between the sites at your leisure.

Top Tip from SLH

Wilpattu is one of the world’s prime National Parks for leopard spotting. For the best chance, head out in the early morning.
