Things to do
NATURE
In the UNESCO protected High Tatras National Park, wildflower-spattered meadows give way to soaring white-capped mountains. Engage a guide for unforgettable climbs up Lomnický štít, to see the Tatras’ second-highest peak in panoramic view. You can learn more about sherpa culture at Starý Smokovec in the dedicated museum. Or take a break in a wooden cabin – where locals and climbers share stories and cool kofola. Also perfect for a pre-Lomnický pause is Skalnaté Pleso. Take the cable car to this Alpine lake and its observatory, built in the 1940s to trace comets across clear night skies. From here, you can also journey on up to the tips of Lomnický.
WATER
A windless day, early in the morning before the lake is rippled by oar strokes, is the best time to see the glacial beauty of Štrbské Pleso. The mist lifts to reveal Mount Solisko reflected on its surface, Norway spruces spiking the shoreline and classic red row boats tethered to the wooden pier. Take a nostalgic punt across the water, looking up to see just how high the Solisko ski jump is that towers above the tops of the firs. You may even have wild ducks for company. Just don’t bank on boating if you visit Vysoké Tatry in winter. The lake often freezes over, making for some magical photography instead.
SKI
Adrenaline reaches its peak at Tatranská Lomnica. This Slovakian ski resort lays claim to some of the longest, highest and most exhilarating slopes in Central Europe. From downhill runs to cross-country and freeride trails, this is one for the serious shredders. Families can bobsleigh their way through Relax Park Jazierko. There are also high (ish) ropes courses for monkeying around and trampolines for bouncing off energy.
